Instructions for Roofing Membrane Installation:

* If you purchased a membrane that is folded in the box, please remove it as soon as possible and lay it out in a clean, dry location to help start the process of removing any wrinkles or creases.

1. Remove from box asap
2. If able, roll on a piece of PVC or cardboard tube
3. If not #2, lay membrane out over the top of the RV at least overnight before installing.
4. Sun is also great and a few hours of the membrane laid out in the sun typically prepares it well for installation.

* We recommend a 2 Day Installation Process whenever possible.

*Adhesive bonds quickly so make sure to follow instructions. The kit has one gallon because of the quality of the bonding strength. If applied properly the gallon will work for any size roofing job.

  1. Day 1 - Remove all vents, skylights, AC units, antennas, sewer caps, solar panels, and top and side termination bars if possible. Sweep wood decking openings, seams, and edges to smooth surface and make sure the deck is clear of all debris.
  2. Carefully remove existing membrane in small sections of approximately 4’. The membrane will be hard to handle if not removed in small sections, and due to it being adhered it is likely to bring up pieces of the decking underneath.
  3. Change any soft or damaged decking with plywood which matches the thickness of the existing boards.
  4. Optional but Preferred Roofing Underlayment – where possible, install 5mm thick Luan sheets over the top of the decking to provide extra protection and a clean, smooth surface to adhere the new membrane to on Day 2. Adhere the roofing underlayment with liquid nails and staples making sure the stapled edges go into the liquid nails to secure the staples down.
  5. Remove membrane from roll or box and lay out on the roof. This will allow the membrane to breathe; any temporary wrinkles or creases will be greatly reduced or gone altogether for Day 2.
  6. Day 2 – Roll your membrane front to back so it’s laid across the roof. Start by rolling the membrane across the roof leaving 15”-18” of overhang on each side. Once the membrane is lined up over the unit, roll each side of the membrane to the middle. Next you’re going to work from the middle and  spread towards each side. (Doesn’t matter which direction you start as long as each side is rolled to meet in the middle before adhesive application.
  7. Apply adhesive to the roof deck surface in increments of 4’ to 6’ only. Make sure to spread evenly to a thickness of 8-12 wet mils. This is a thin layer and will provide all the adhesion you need. Try to minimize any pooling of adhesive, as this could cause the appearance of surface defects. The adhesive bonds quickly and applying in these smaller increments will allow you to be more precise when adhering the membrane. Make sure to cut out a small “x” where the vents, skylights, and any appliances will be reinstalled.
  8. To remove the wrinkles and air pockets use a squeegee, (Use a squeegee as black will leave marks) and in a pulling motion press into the membrane and pull toward the edge. Always work the air pocket or wrinkle so that you are pulling it toward the edge of the roof. All surface wrinkles and defects must be addressed to result in excellent installation appearance and product performance. You should do this with each 4’ to 6’ section you apply; do not wait until the entire membrane is adhered as that might lead to wrinkles and air pockets not coming out. Once you’ve completed the entire roof you should go back and use the squeegee one more time. Best practice: one person on each side using squeegees to pull away from each other. Side to side Width across. This maximizes the adhesion and flattens the membrane.
  9. Allow the roof to dry for 3 hours and then proceed as follows:
  10. Using butyl tape under all fixtures except the AC unit and sewer caps, reinstall the vents and all other roof appliances and accessories. Make sure to use the AC seal when reinstalling the AC unit.
  11. Over every penetration point on the roof (other than the AC unit), use self-level to cover the edges of all penetration points. Use the self-level in the same fashion for the front and back termination bar areas. This will provide double protection with the butyl and self-level.
  12. Finally, Install TERMINATION BARS LAST. USE TO TIGHTEN UP MEMBRANE. Using butyl tape on the back of the termination bars, reinstall the side termination bars pulling down tight to remove any remaining small wrinkles or air pockets. Screw the termination bars in and install a new screw cover. Tuck the 18” of membrane under the cap and reinstall the termination bars after doing the side ones.
